Cephalopods - squid, cuttlefish and octopuses - change colour by using tiny muscles in their skins to stretch out small sacs of black colouration. These sacs are located in the animal's skin cells, and when a cell is ready to change colour, the brain sends a signal to the muscles and they contract.
This makes the sacs expand and creates the optical effect which makes the animal look like it is changing colour.

To mimic these natural mechanisms, the team used "smart" electro-active polymeric materials, connected to an electric circuit.
When a voltage was applied, the materials contracted; they returned to their original shape when they were short-circuited.
"These artificial muscles can replicate the [natural] muscular action… and can have strong visual effects," said Dr Rossiter.
"These materials, and this approach, is ideal for making smart colour-changing skins or soft devices in which fluid is pumped from one place to another.
As usual, you can also use this squid post to talk about the security stories in the news that I haven't covered.

We will be attempting to reschedule Network Improvement Servies Maintenance #3 in multiple parts in order to ensure the successful upgrade. A summary of the 3 part process is as follows:
1: (completed during the Wednesday maintenance window) Moved network routes to route around the hardware we will be replacing to minimize service interruptions.
2: (Scheduled for Saturday June 2nd)
Connecting upgraded hardware and verifying it is working as expected.
3: (Scheduled for Tuesday June 5th)
Moving transits and going live on the upgraded hardware.
This part of the maintenance will occur this Saturday June 2nd at 8pm and will last for 4 hours. There is expected to be no service interruption during this maintenance as we will just be connecting the new hardware (on the backend) and verifying it is functioning as expected. No traffic will be routed to it from the outside. Although this is not expected to be customer facing, this is a network change and the nature of these changes can produce unexpected service interruption. This maintenance is laying the foundation for Tuesdays Part 3 maintenance where we will be finalizing the cut over to our new upgraded hardware. We appreciate your patience during these maintenance windows.
